Tsuruga Port is a well-suited natural port located in the inner region of Tsuruga Bay, Fukui Prefecture, and has long prospered as a trading center connecting various regions of Japan to continental Asia. Also, as it is located approximately in the center of the Japan Sea coastline, Tsuruga Port is close to countries on the opposite coast, including South Korea, northeastern China, and far eastern Russia; this location makes it a gateway for trade with the opposite coast (especially from the Kansai and Chukyo regions of Japan). In addition, following the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tsuruga Port is expected to become a major alternative for international ports on the Pacific Ocean side from the perspective of business continuity planning (BCP) in the event of incidents such as a major Nankai Trough earthquake.
The Maruyama-South Multipurpose International Terminal, a major logistics hub in Tsuruga Port, has a quay wall of 410 meters (water depth 12-14 meters) and a wharf site of 18 hectares. In order to accommodate future increases in trade volume and transfer efficiency, the quay wall will be extended by 220 meters (water depth 9 meters) , the wharf site by 4.8 hectares, and the terminal is scheduled to be expanded by 4.8 hectares in 2027. Further, the terminal is designed to be a next-generation, high-standard unit load terminal with state-of-the-art technologies such as automatic mooring equipment, gate management by fixed cameras, and chassis position management by a centralized system.
Tsuruga Port's regular container route for foreign trade was first opened to South Korea in 1990, followed by international RORO (roll-on/roll-off) ships in 2010; international feeder vessels have been in service since 2021, connecting Tsuruga to Kobe Bay by domestic vessels. As for domestic trade, in addition to domestic ferries and RORO ship with the Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido, a domestic RORO ship liner service has put into service in 2019, the only one on the Sea of Japan side, connecting Honshu with Hakata Bay in Kyushu, to promote modal shift and strengthen port service functions.
The role of regional ports is becoming increasingly diversified; in November 2009, our company was established as a third-sector company with investments from Fukui Prefecture, Tsuruga City, and logistics companies. We will use this support to manage and operate a multipurpose international terminal and promote trade in Tsuruga Bay.
We will continue to strengthen our solidarity with related organizations to further improve port services and fortify our cargo collection system. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in these endeavors.
